For many of us here in the Southern California area, our days consist of:
- Traveling to work by car or public transportation to get to work.
- Working our eight to however long shifts, mostly sitting, behind a desk.
- Traveling back home, fighting through rush hour crowds.
- Eating dinner, sitting around the television, exercising, then hopefully getting to bed at a reasonable hour.
And the next day, we do it all over again, five days a week (if we are lucky).
Trust us, we know how it is – we are right there with you! Figure around 80 percent of our day is spent sitting, which is as bad for your health as being obese.
Health experts urge people to get up and get moving. Our bodies are not made to be sedentary – they are made to move. When you stop moving, your body (i.e. your metabolism) basically goes into sleep mode. We are then left with this: how do we combat the negative effects that unfortunately, some of our jobs demand?
1. If walking is an option, do it! Try using a wireless headset and stand up when you take a call. Take the stairs instead of an elevator when you go out for lunch. If you have a question for a co-worker down the hall, walk over to them instead of sending an e-mail.
2. If your office offers a standing workstation, use it. If your feet tend to get tired from extended periods of standing, get an anti-fatigue mat or try a desk riser that can convert for usage for standing or sitting.
3. Enjoy a stretching break. Stretching and flexing ‘wakes’ up your muscles, gets your blood pumping, and jump starts your metabolism.
4. Switch out your office chair for a Zenergy Ball Chair. This will keep your body engaged and moving without you even really noticing.
Don’t let your desk job kill you. Stand up for your rights for a healthy lifestyle!
